UNSC to Conduct Emergency Meeting After Russian Drones were Downed in Poland

On 10th September a Drone Incursion took place in polish airspace where it was shot down under the constitution’s article 4 suggesting violation of the national airspace. As a result to this downing of Drones the Polish Government called out onto the UN for a emergency meeting, scheduled for 12th September.

Reports have suggested that the drones involved in the incursion included Gerbera, which were headed towards the Rzeszów Airport, that is believed to be a major NATO logistics hub used to transport arms and supplies into Ukraine.

However the Incursion was not limited to only one region, but included various other areas of Poland including Lublin and other villages where debris and damaged objects from the downed drones were seen.

As an act of offending the national territories and the sovereignty of Poland, the Polish Foreign Ministry made the formal request of publicly calling for a meeting to “draw the world’s attention to this unprecedented Russian drone attack” on a UN, NATO and EU member state.

On one end this the senior members of Polish government including the Prime Minister and the foreign minister echoed their voice condemning Russia’s unjustified acts of deliberate provocation, where the PM Donald Tusk said that “it was not a mistake” while the FM Radosław Sikorski pointed out that the drone incursion came at the same time as a major wave of attacks into Ukraine were launched making it apparently a pre-planned strategy.

On the other hand, various Polish allies in Europe including Germany, France and others expressed their solidarity with the country condemning the incursion and offering help for strengthening air defence along with voicing for Poland’s support on international platforms.

NATO’s Secretery General Mark Rutte also engaged in a dialogue where he defined this act as something “reckless and unacceptable” whether or not it was intentional.

In summary these drone incursions highlighted how the Russia-Ukraine war is increasing day by day, suggesting that even after the Trump-Putin summit in Anchorage Alaska, no success has been made on diplomatic grounds to call for maximum restraint and potentially work forward to ending the war.

In conclusion, it can be argued that UN Security Council’s role could become a pivotal step in shaping international accountability, and now as the meeting has been scheduled on an emergency basis, it is nerve reckoning to see where these discussions might lead.
