U.S. congressman Joe Wilson calls for Imran Khan’s release

On February 7, 2025, U.S. Congressman Joe Wilson addressed a letter to Pakistan’s political and military leadership, calling for the immediate release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan. He emphasized that democratic nations must resolve political disputes through free and fair elections rather than by imprisoning political opponents. Wilson highlighted that Khan has been detained since August 2023 on charges his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), claims are politically motivated and aimed at suppressing opposition.

In his letter, Wilson acknowledged his disagreements with Khan, particularly regarding his foreign policy stances, including his support for China and Russia. However, he underscored that democratic values must be upheld regardless of political differences. He stressed that democracy flourishes when fundamental rights, including freedom of speech, press, and assembly, are protected. Moreover, he urged Pakistan’s leadership to ensure due process, respect for human rights, and adherence to the rule of law.

Furthermore, Wilson reminded Pakistan that its most productive and stable relations with the United States have occurred during periods of democratic governance. He warned that continued political repression could strain bilateral ties and weaken Pakistan’s global standing. Expressing concern over the erosion of democratic norms, he pledged to engage with the U.S. administration on this matter, advocating for a foreign policy approach that prioritizes democratic principles and human rights.

His appeal adds to the growing international scrutiny of Pakistan’s political environment, where allegations of media censorship, judicial overreach, and suppression of dissent have raised alarm. The congressman’s call reflects the broader global concern about ensuring political stability and democratic integrity in Pakistan. Releasing Imran Khan, Wilson argued, would not only restore faith in Pakistan’s democratic process but also help strengthen its diplomatic relations with the United States and the international community.
