A shocking case of honour killing in Nawabshah: Two sisters were electrocuted by their brother, who also threatened to kill his mother and sister-in-law.
In a tragic case of honour killing in Nawabshah, two sisters were brutally electrocuted by their brother. The incident took place early Thursday, and police have since arrested the suspect. According to the mother of the accused, her son allegedly drugged his sisters before electrocuting them. Despite intervention from his mother and sister-in-law, the brother continued his violent actions and later threatened to kill them if they resisted.
The bodies of the victims were taken to People’s Medical Hospital for post-mortem, while police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the accused. This incident highlights the ongoing issue of gender-based violence in Pakistan.
The Hari Welfare Association (HWA) reported a shocking 837 cases of violence against women in Sindh during the first half of 2024. Among these, 63 women were killed in the name of honour, 118 were murdered, and 174 committed suicide. Other alarming crimes included 140 abductions, 125 rapes, 68 domestic violence cases, and harrowing incidents such as forced marriages, child marriages, and acid attacks.
Most of these crimes were reported in the Larkana and Sukkur divisions, regions known for entrenched patriarchal norms. The slow pace of legal proceedings in gender violence cases has hindered victims’ access to justice. Many women face challenges in pursuing their cases, particularly those without resources or connections.
This horrific case of honour killing is yet another reminder of the urgent need for legal reforms and societal change to protect women from such violence.
