Trump Asks US Supreme Court to Fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook

On 18th September 2025, US President Trump asked the Supreme court to grant him the authority to fire Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook, challenging the limits on presidential authority over the central bank.

Trump claims that Cook’s actions are defined as obstructive to his economic agenda particularly regarding the interest rate policy and monetary oversight, but legal experts say the Federal Reserve Act makes firing governors extremely difficult as all governors enjoy a fixed 14-year term and can only be removed for a cause making such dismissals extremely difficult.

Lisa Cook, who was appointed in 2022, joined the office as the first Black woman to serve as the Federal Reserve’s governor. During her tenure Cook’s policies have generally aligned with Fed Chair Jerome Powell on controlling inflation while balancing employment.

Lisa was also the first one to be newly vacated this seat rather than being someone who replaced a sitting governor, in this context, she was nominated by President Joe Biden in 2021, and confirmed in 2022 to the board of governors of the federal system which usually has seven vacant seats.

Looking at Lisa Cook and her designation, Critics have argued that Trump’s opposition nature of considering the regimes of Joe Biden thoroughly rotten might be a factor why he would want to replace all his nominees currently serving in the government, however a more logical stance appears to be that Trump’s clash over independence and disagreement on policies make him thoroughly oppose such political actors, wanting him to revoke their positions, just because they do not meet up to the standards defined by the President.

In essence, analysts warn that if Trump’s appeal succeeds, it could erode the Fed’s independence and  create precedents for the president to pressure governors for political gains. From a wider perspective many also argue that the US President Trump wants to reshape US institutions and expand his presidential powers defining it as “his lust for control” with supporting evidence from recent history on how manipulative and involved he has been in every matter.

Lastly, it can be said that the supreme court;s decision could set a precedent on the boundaries of executive power versus independent institutions, with them also being a determining factor on what gets to be in the hand of the President further influencing his decision making and behaviours having severe impacts on not only the entire nation but the whole world.
