ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif announced on Monday the immediate dissolution of the Pakistan Public Works Department (Pak PWD) due to persistent poor performance and corruption.
The directive came during a high-level meeting focused on reducing government expenditures and streamlining infrastructure, according to a press release from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).
The prime minister highlighted Pak PWD’s failure to meet its objectives and called for alternative mechanisms to handle development projects previously managed by the department.
Attendees at the meeting included Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema, PM’s Adviser on Political Affairs Rana Sanaullah, Minister of State for Finance and Revenue, Deputy Chairman Planning Commission Jehanzeb Khan, and other senior officials.
A report from a committee led by Deputy Planning Commission Chairman Jehanzeb Khan was presented to the prime minister, detailing recommendations for abolishing certain government entities and merging others to reduce expenditures. The prime minister instructed the committee to finalize additional recommendations.
