Pope Francis Dies at 88 After Turbulent Yet Transformative Papacy

Pope Francis, the first Latin American head of the Catholic Church, has died at 88, the Vatican announced on Monday. His death came just a day after he was seen greeting crowds during Easter Sunday, despite ongoing health struggles with pneumonia.

Cardinal Kevin Farrell confirmed the pontiff passed away at 7:35 a.m., calling it “a profound loss.” Francis had recently returned to public life after a 38-day hospital stay. His final Easter message, read by an aide, urged a ceasefire in Gaza and echoed his calls for justice and peace.

Beloved by many for his humility and focus on the poor, Pope Francis pushed major reforms and challenged Church traditions. His body will lie in repose at the Saint Martha residence Monday night, with global tributes already pouring in. Spain has declared three days of mourning to honor his legacy.
