End of an Era: Virat Kohli Bows Out of Test Cricket

Virat Kohli, one of India’s greatest batters, has officially retired from Test cricket, ending a legendary 14-year career. The 36-year-old announced his decision through an emotional social media post on Monday, just days after Rohit Sharma’s own Test retirement.

Kohli’s post read: “It’s been 14 years since I first wore the baggy blue… I’ve given it everything I had, and it’s given me back so much more than I could’ve hoped for.” His heartfelt words marked the end of an era that shaped modern Indian cricket.

Debuting in 2011 against the West Indies, Kohli struggled initially. However, he quickly turned things around, announcing himself with a stunning century in Adelaide during the 2011-12 Australia tour. From there, he never looked back.

He played 123 Tests, scored 9,230 runs, including 30 centuries and 31 fifties. He also holds the record for most double hundreds by an Indian in Tests—seven in total. His contributions weren’t limited to the bat alone.

As captain, Kohli led India in 68 Tests, winning 40—a record for any Indian skipper. Under his leadership, India climbed from No. 7 to No. 1 in the ICC Test rankings and made two World Test Championship finals.

Kohli’s golden years came between 2016 and 2019. During this period, he averaged over 66 and scored 14 Test hundreds. His 2018 England tour stands out, where he topped the series charts with 583 runs.

However, his form declined after 2020. Despite a century in Perth last year, his average dropped to 32.56 over the past two years. With India in transition, his departure—alongside Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin—leaves a massive gap.

The BCCI confirmed that Kohli had discussed his retirement in advance of the upcoming England series. Though selectors hoped he would stay, the decision is now final.

With Kohli gone, Indian cricket enters a new phase. His absence will be deeply felt, but his legacy will continue to inspire generations.
