Bangladeshi security expert proposes “Nuclear Treaty” with Pakistan to counter India

Dr. Shahiduzzaman Advocates Strategic Alliance with Pakistan Amid Rising Anti-India Sentiment

Bangladeshi professor and security expert Dr. Shahiduzzaman has called for a nuclear treaty between Bangladesh and Pakistan, describing Pakistan as the most trustworthy ally to counter potential Indian aggression. His suggestion came during a recent meeting at the Retired Armed Forces Officers’ Welfare Association (RAOWA), where the proposal garnered significant support from retired army officers.

Dr. Shahiduzzaman stressed that a defense partnership with Pakistan would serve as a deterrent against India, which he claimed has consistently maintained a threatening posture towards Bangladesh. According to him, Pakistan’s strategic importance and reliability as an ally far outweigh any diplomatic relationships Bangladesh has with India.

This push for closer ties with Pakistan comes after the removal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who ruled for 15 years. Her ousting followed a student-led movement, and since then, the political climate in Bangladesh has shifted, with pro-Pakistan and anti-India sentiments gaining momentum. A notable example of this shift is Bangladesh’s first-ever celebration of Pakistan’s founder, Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s birth anniversary, on September 11.

The growing political and social divide has added weight to the argument for stronger defense relations with Pakistan, particularly as Bangladesh seeks to navigate regional tensions.
