Afghan refugee family devastated as Nowshera incident highlights extremism and rising cases of Gender-Based violence in Pakistan
In a tragic incident of gender-based violence, a man in Nowshera fatally shot his sister following a minor disagreement during Fajr prayers, authorities revealed on Saturday.
The incident took place within an Afghan refugee family residing in the Hakimabad area of Nowshera, as reported by local police.
Mewa Gul, the father of the siblings, filed a First Information Report (FIR) detailing the heartbreaking event. According to his account, the family was asleep in their respective rooms when the tragedy unfolded. His son, Hamza, attempted to wake his sister Asma for morning prayers, which led to a verbal altercation.
In a moment of uncontrolled anger, Hamza reportedly shot his sister before fleeing the scene. The grieving father shared that the event has left the entire family in shock.
Police officials confirmed that they recovered the weapon used in the incident and have launched a manhunt for the suspect. The investigation is ongoing, with multiple leads being explored to apprehend the accused.
This shocking incident in Nowshera adds to the growing list of gender-based violence cases in Pakistan. Just recently, another case in Faisalabad saw a woman strangled to death by her husband, who suspected her of extramarital affairs. The crime took place in Chak No 595-GB, where the suspect used a shawl to kill his wife. The police have since collected forensic evidence and are pursuing further investigations. The victim’s body was moved to the mortuary for an autopsy.
These incidents underscore the urgent need for addressing domestic violence and gender-based crimes in the region.
