The Government of Punjab has launched the CM Punjab Green Credit Program (CMPGCP), a first-of-its-kind initiative that rewards citizens with cash incentives for taking part in climate-positive actions.
The program, introduced by the Environment Protection and Climate Change Department, is currently running in a pilot phase in Lahore. It aims to encourage people to adopt sustainable practices that contribute to tackling climate change. Citizens who participate can earn “Green Credits,” with each credit valued at PKR 10,000. Individuals can earn up to PKR 100,000 through verified activities. The process is simple. Participants must register on the CMPGCP web portal, select their activity, and submit details through a Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) form. After review, and in some cases physical verification, activities are approved by a supervisory committee before Green Credits are issued.
The program recognizes 35 different climate-positive actions, grouped under categories such as air, water, land, waste, and biodiversity. Examples include planting at least ten trees, installing solar appliances, recycling plastic waste, rainwater harvesting, rooftop gardening, using bicycles or e-bikes, and organizing climate awareness activities. Each action has its own requirements, all of which are available on the official website.
While currently limited to Lahore, the CMPGCP is expected to expand to other districts across Punjab.
