The Punjab government has taken a major step to protect the sanctity of religious texts. Starting May 12, a 90-day ban is in effect across the province. The order prohibits the use of newspapers and printed materials containing Quranic verses for wrapping or packaging items.
The Home Department enforced this ban under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code. Officials say the move was necessary to prevent disrespect and maintain public peace. Many packaging materials often include sacred words, which end up being thrown away or used carelessly. This deeply offends religious sentiments.
According to the Punjab Home Secretary, using such materials for commercial or domestic use is not just insensitive but also dangerous. “It can cause unrest,” he stated. Therefore, authorities must ensure that sacred text is never misused.
To spread awareness, the government has directed the publication of this order in the official gazette. In addition, it will be announced through newspapers, TV channels, and social media. Police, divisional commissioners, and deputy commissioners are instructed to enforce the rule strictly.
This action is not new. In 2016, the Information Ministry had also highlighted the issue. Publishing Quranic verses in newspapers, it said, could lead to desecration. Under Section 295-B of the Pakistan Penal Code, any deliberate disrespect to the Holy Quran is punishable by life imprisonment.
Public cooperation is crucial. The Home Department has urged citizens, shopkeepers, and publishers to act responsibly. Everyone must ensure that printed religious text is used with care and stored properly.
The decision is a reminder of our collective duty. While packaging needs are important, respect for sacred text must come first. Better alternatives such as plain or recycled paper should be used instead.
