Non-bailable warrants issued for PTI leaders in May 9 riots case

FAISALABAD: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Faisalabad issued non-bailable arrest warrants for key PTI leaders on Wednesday.

The court took action against Omar Ayub, Shibli Faraz, Kanwal Shouzeb, and Fawad Chaudhry. These warrants relate to the violent events of May 9, 2023. Authorities accuse the leaders of inciting protests that escalated into violence. Protesters allegedly set a police vehicle on fire outside the State Bank of Pakistan building.

Judge Javed Iqbal Sheikh presided over the hearing and issued the warrants. The leaders failed to appear in court despite multiple summons. The court rejected their pleas for exemption and decided to proceed with their cases separately.

A Turning Point in Political Unrest

The May 9 protests followed the brief detention of PTI founder Imran Khan. The unrest quickly turned into violent riots. Protesters targeted state buildings and military installations, including the Lahore Corps Commander’s residence. This marked one of Pakistan’s most significant episodes of political unrest in recent history.

In response, the government launched a sweeping crackdown on PTI leaders and supporters. Many individuals now face charges under Pakistan’s strict Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA). Section 7 of the ATA criminalizes terrorism-related activities and carries severe penalties for offenders.

Legal Action and Accountability

Authorities claim Omar Ayub, Shibli Faraz, Kanwal Shouzeb, and Fawad Chaudhry orchestrated the violence. Several other accused individuals have regularly attended court proceedings. However, the absence of these four leaders prompted the court to issue arrest warrants.

Meanwhile, Imran Khan sought bail in multiple cases related to the protests. Authorities insist on pursuing legal action to ensure accountability and prevent future unrest.

Allegations of Political Targeting

Despite the government’s stance, opposition parties and human rights organizations have raised concerns. They accuse authorities of using the May 9 riots to suppress political dissent. Critics argue the actions against PTI leaders are politically motivated and unfair.

The May 9 events remain a defining moment in Pakistan’s political landscape. These developments continue to shape public discourse and test the country’s fragile democracy.
