Animator Buck Woodall seeks $10 billion in damages ahead of Oscar nomination
Buck Woodall, an animator, has filed a lawsuit against Disney. He claims that the company copied his 2003 screenplay, Bucky, to create the Moana franchise. Woodall alleges that the 2016 film and its 2024 sequel feature key similarities with his work. These include a Polynesian setting, a teenage protagonist, spirit animals, and a magical demigod with a signature hook. Woodall seeks damages of $10 billion, which is 2.5% of the Moana franchise’s revenue.
Disney has rejected the claims. The company asserts that Moana was independently developed. Director Ron Clements said he only learned of Woodall’s Bucky project after the lawsuit was filed. He emphasized that the team did not draw inspiration from Woodall’s screenplay.
This legal dispute comes at a critical time for Moana 2, which is a strong contender for several Oscar nominations. The film may receive recognition in categories such as Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song. However, this lawsuit could affect the Academy’s view of the film and its chances of winning.
The lawsuit may also set an important precedent in the entertainment industry. It highlights the necessity of protecting intellectual property. The case underscores the potential consequences of copyright infringement for creators and companies.
