Donald Trump revived the idea of purchasing Greenland which gets rejection with the statement “Greenland is not for sale”. He expressed his desire for Washington to control Greenland. The main drivers behind it the national security and global freedom.
While the selection for US ambassador to Denmark, he unveiled his desire to buy Greenland. Trump stated, “For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.”
Greenland is the world’s largest island. It sits between the Atlantic and Arctic oceans. The ice sheet engulfs 80% of it. Greenland also serves as a US military base. It gained home rule from Denmark in 1979. Its head of government confirmed that Trump’s latest calls would be meaningless as those made in his first term. Trump first made claims for Canada, called it the 51st US state. He also wants to retake Panama Canal and now Greenland.
Similar kind of interests can be witnessed back in 2019 when he presented the idea of purchasing the territory of Greenland for its abundance in natural resources and strategic geopolitical location. Though, Biden’s administration suppressed that idea.
On Sunday, Trump has selected Ken Howery, PayPal co-founder, for Us ambassador to Denmark. He considered him a potential individual to pursuit his wish to seize Greenland. “Ken will do a wonderful job in representing the interests of the United States,’ Trump said.
This renewed interest smashed by Denmark. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen criticized “Greenland is not for sale. Greenland is not Danish. Greenland belongs to Greenland.” The opposition Danish leaders also condemned this idea. Meanwhile, Trump has cancelled planned meeting over Frederiksen’s rejection. The president-elect is renewing unsuccessful calls to buy the island from Denmark. He is adding to the list of countries with he is picking fight even before holding the office.
