IT Minister Prioritizes National Security Amid Internet Disruptions

Pakistan’s IT Minister, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, reassured citizens that the government prioritizes national security, especially amidst recent internet disruptions. She acknowledged concerns about slow internet speeds, attributing them to efforts aimed at upgrading the country’s web-management system.

To address these concerns, Khawaja announced plans to auction 4G and 5G spectrums in April. This initiative aims to improve internet quality and speeds. The auction is part of broader efforts to enhance Pakistan’s digital infrastructure and stimulate economic growth.

Khawaja also highlighted the growing threat of cyberattacks and emphasized the need for stronger cyber defenses. She urged citizens to report any internet-related issues, assuring them that the government would address them swiftly.

Her statements came amid allegations that the government had implemented a national firewall similar to China’s Great Firewall. This move has been blamed for the internet slowdowns. However, Khawaja denied these claims, stating that the government is working to resolve issues with internet service providers (ISPs) and telecom companies.

The disruptions have affected millions of users across Pakistan. Many report speeds 40-80% slower than usual. Businesses and IT professionals have expressed concerns, fearing these disruptions may harm Pakistan’s digital economy.

As Pakistan navigates the challenges of digital security and internet governance, the government’s efforts to balance national security and internet freedom will be closely watched.
